Super Junior awarded with ‘Best Selling Album’ at the ‘2010 Gaon Chart Awards’

Super Junior was honored with the distinction of having 2010’s “Best Selling Album”, as determined by the ‘2010 Gaon Chart Awards‘ in an awards ceremony on February 9th.

The boys released their fourth full album, “Bonamana“, last year and it managed to sell a total of 200,193 album units to come in first in terms of physical album sales.

The group’s leader, Lee Teuk, expressed on stage after receiving the award, “We’re very happy to receive such a big award at a fair and authoritative awards ceremony. If America has the Billboard Charts and Japan has the Oricon Charts, Korea has the Gaon Charts. Every year when we go on promotions, we personally experience how it feels to be the boom of the Hallyu Wave not only in Asia, but all around the world. We will work harder in our activities.”

During the ceremony, Gaon Charts’ official offline sales data was revealed for the first time since the Recording Industry Association’s aggregates were suspended in the latter half of 2008. Online charts were also revealed for the very first time.

The Gaon Charts is the national record chart of South Korea and compiles data from online digital sales and from offline sales (both domestic and overseas).

Meanwhile, Kang Seung Yoon and G.NA were awarded the male and female rookie awards respectively.

Go Woo Ri makes up for Rainbow’s short synchronized swimming performance

Rainbow’s Go Woo Ri showed off her fantastic swimming skills through MBC “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships.”

In this special show, she won the gold medal in 50m free-style race. In the first part of the show, Rainbow performed a synchronized swimming skit that got edited down to just 40-seconds.

The performance was also deemed inappropriate by many netizens because of how revealing their outfits were.

Although their performance was shortened, they made a name for themselves through the swim races. Go Woo Ri won first and Jaekyung, the leader of the group, won second.

DSP Media said, “Go Woo Ri goes to Korea National Sport University and Jaekyung used to train a lot in dancing so they are both athletic. They practiced swimming while rehearsing the synchronized swimming performance. This led to their success during the race.”

How did the “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships” outshine other Lunar New Year specials?

MBC’s “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships” ranked in at the top of the Lunar New Year’s programs with a viewer rating of 18.7% and 17.6% for part one and two respectively.

While the statistic is very impressive, the show has also garnered a high level of praise for its originality and creativity. Many felt that the program provided something fresh which broke away from the standard Lunar New Year’s specials.

There were three distinctive points which made the show stand out amidst the competition.

First, the show aimed to include all generations for its viewership, and was not directed exclusively towards teenagers alone. Secondly, the show centered around wins and losses, and drew away from sexually suggestive or stimulating content. Lastly, the idols themselves seemed to truly enjoy the competitions – it was a positive energy that managed to touch the distant viewers.

◆ “Even older age groups are into it, generations of popularity!”

Programs which center around idols usually have a limited viewerbase, which mostly consists of teens and those in their 20s. When girl groups prefer to perform ’sexy dances’ for their variety showappearances, the older age groups tend to switch channels out of embarrassment.

The “Idol Championships” managed to shatter this limitation by introducing a sports content to their program. Since sports is accessible to all generations, MBC drew in a wide audience for their Lunar New Year special. Not everyone will be interested in singing or dancing, but almost everyone has an interest in some type of sport.

One viewer, Lee Hyun Sung (57) of Suwon, commented, “I normally don’t watch programs with idols in them, but I had a fun time watching this show with my family. Watching young singers work hard not only kept my interest, but also made me feel proud of them.”

◆ “The program featured the idols’ desire to win, there was nothing scripted or made up.”

The idols showed the beauty of getting out there and being active, an image that is vastly different from their dolled-up, scripted images on stage.

For once, the idols looked and acted like their ages, jumping up and shouting joyously for wins, and looking gloomy on their losses. Some joked that the idols looked more upset about missing a medal than losing on a music program.

The idols broke all barriers and supported and encouraged each other. The winners consoled the losers, and the losers sincerely congratulated the winners. The program allowed for true sportsmanship to shine, giving some substance to the otherwise thin battle between idols.

In the viewer message board, many left comments like, “It was nice seeing them help each other up and give encouragement,” and “I hope the idols continue to develop a relationship where they are able to push and support each other to do better in their careers.”

◆ “No exploitation, just a genuine idol festival.”

The idols who appeared on the program are all giving a positive response as well, but for different reasons from the viewers.

Every time the Lunar New Year holiday rolled around, idols were forced to come up with and rehearse for a variety of different dances and songs for program specials. No such effort was needed for the “Idol Championships”, since the idols were only required to bring their stamina and a will to win.

Senior idols Kim Dong Wan and Hwang Bo were also able to spend a more meaningful time with their juniors, since it’s difficult for idols to gather in one location.

One idol agency reprsentative revealed, “We feel that the members genuinely had a lot of fun. They said that it felt like they had returned to their school days. It was an opportunity to have some fun in the midst of their busy schedule, so a lot of them enjoyed it.”

ZE:A scares fans with a joke

ZE:A recently shocked their fans by making a surprise announcement, claiming that member Dongjun would be leaving the group and that they’d be continuing on with eight members. As it turns out, the announcement was just a hoax.

On February 5th, ZE:A’s representatives posted the following announcement on the group’s official Me2day: “As of today, ZE:A will be moving forward as an eight member group with the exclusion of one member. The upcoming fanmeet will be Dongjun’s final appearance with the group, as he will be joining the Korean Olympic Committee. We hope ZE:A’s fanclub makes note of this announcement.”

After fans got over the initial shock, many realized that the announcement was a joke, playing on Dongjun’s impressive gold medal results at the “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships“. Dongjun had surprised fans and panelists alike by recording 6.02 seconds in the 50m sprint, the closest any celebrity on set came to the world record of 5.56 seconds.

Netizens commented, “My heart dropped thinking Dongjun was really leaving”, “You scared me!”, and “He really does have the skills to join the KOC.”

TVXQ’s Changmin talks about loving without regret

Sharing his thoughts about love, the idol melted his fans’ hearts with a candid, yet touching reflection.

“I think we make repeated mistakes and regret as we live on in life. I always say that I shouldn’t act frustrated towards my parents, and that I should treat them well, but whenever they call me, I just say things like, ‘What do you want to know for?’ I end up regretting it all in the end,” he explained.

Changmin continued, “It’s the same for your lover. You always feel that you should treat them better, but you don’t realize how precious they are until later on. Regarding love, there is no ‘later.’ If you feel that you should do it, express it now and just love. Don’t do something you’re going to regret.”

UEE’s mini homepage gets attacked by Seungri fans

Ever since After School’s UEE appeared on SBS’s “King of Idols“, her mini homepage has been off-the-wall busy.

For those of you who haven’t heard of “King of Idols”, it was a Lunar New Year special that had numerous idols competing against each other in various games. But it had an interesting twist – the idols also had to participate in a ‘couple game’, where they had to pick a partner of the opposite sex. The filming took place in Pattaya, Thailand for two nights and three days.

When the episode aired on February 2nd, fans of Big Bang’s Seungri became enraged by UEE’s disregard towards their idol.

First, during the game ‘King of Strategy‘ game (in which opposing teams had to push one another into the water), UEE stated, “I just want to beat Seungri” and ended up pushing him into the water during the game. Additionally, during the couple picking game, Seungri opened his heart to UEE – only to receive a “No thanks” from her end. UEE ended up picking 2AM’s Jinwoon.

After watching UEE’s behavior, Seungri fans attacked UEE’s mini homepage with malicious and abusive comments.

Seeing these negative comments, a few netizens stated, “This is too much. Even if you are upset as a Seungri fan, I think this kind of comment is manner-less” and “What would Seungri think if he saw these comments?”
